AUTHOR TALKS with Nikki Rogers
If you are a school on the Gold Coast, book in an author talk or storytime session with children’s book author and illustrator, Nikki Rogers.
Author / Illustrator / Teacher / Speaker
I love to visit schools and kindergartens in the Gold Coast area to share my story and inspire children to be the best they can be.
There are lots of things that I can do when I visit such as:
- Storytime sessions: Most suited for prep to year 2.
- Book-themed lessons: Most suited for years 2 to 4.
- Author Talk: Most suited for years 2 to 4.
A storytime session includes me reading one of my children’s stories, some rhyming, dancing, actions, a craft activity and question time. The sessions go for around 30 minutes and are best suited to groups of around 15 to 25 children. If extra time is available I can also draw an illustration with the help of the students.
These are most suited to the kindergarten/prep/year 1 age group.
Feedback: “Nikki’s stories are so interesting. The children are mesmerized by them. How wonderful to have the actual author and illustrator present the story. Nikki has wonderful classroom management skills whilst also utilizing puppetry and singing with her guitar to keep the children entertained. Recommend!” ~ Noah’s Ark kindergarten
“Very special to meet an author who is so willing to explain how students could use her skills and ideas in their own writing. Thank you.” ~ Mrs Tyson, Year 1 Teacher
“Nikki was friendly and engaging from the moment she entered my classroom. The students were captivated as she read her story and then answered their questions.” ~ Mrs Gibson, Year 2 teacher at St Andrews Lutheran College
My author talk is most suited to grades 2 to 4. During the author talk, I tell my story about what inspired me to start writing. I bring in lots of different bits and pieces such as my first drafts, illustration sketches, original illustrations and print proofs to show the children part of the process. If I have access to a projector I can also share an animation of one of my books. An author talk generally goes for around 45 minutes. I can also tailor a talk to suit shorter lengths of time or combine it with an illustration workshop or book-themed lesson if time allows.
For 1 hour sessions, along with a brief author talk, I can guide children through an illustration workshop. The chickens below were drawn by year 4 students after an illustration demonstration.
BOOK THEMED LESSONS:
These sessions are great for grade 2 upwards and include a storytime session with one of my books and hands-on activities to accompany the story. I can present a book-themed lesson for any of my books such as:
A Beautiful Girl – This lesson is a self-esteem builder for girls, as it encourages them to identify and value the beauty in themselves and others. (suitable for an all-girls group).
A Hero Like You – This is a great lesson to inspire children to see the greatness in themselves and others, and recognise how their unique qualities can make the world a better place.
What Love Looks Like – This lesson aims to help children recognise how they feel loved and the different ways that others experience and express love. This would be appropriate around mother’s day or Valentine’s Day.
The Garden in my Heart – This lesson helps children identify what they want to grow in their lives and how they will achieve those goals.
WHAT WILL IT COST?
The Australian Author Association recommends $325 per hour for author school visits, however, I can offer special packages where every child also receives a book, which is exceptional value.
Since there may be covid restistrictions I can also offer to send book sets to classes and book in an online author visit via Zoom.
If you are located on the Gold Coast or the surrounding area and would like to talk to me about visiting your school or kindergarten, send me a message via the contact page and I’ll get back to you ASAP. Thank you!
Alternatively, you can book full day sessions through Speakers Ink.
